Victoria’s fire risk for autumn 2025

27 February 2025

As we head into autumn it is expected that there will be an increased fire risk across parts of Victoria.

The key areas of increased fire risk are:

  • western and central Victoria
  • south and west Gippsland.

The Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Autumn 2025 (External link) highlights that an extended period of low rain has increased the fuel load in these regions of the state.

The autumn months are expected to see higher than average maximum temperatures, but an average rainfall. Fuel loads in some parts will stay high or may even increase during this period.

While the rest of the state is forecast to have a normal fire potential, fast running fires are still possible on dry and windy days.

These predicted conditions may cause a delay to the start of planned burning in some areas. Opportunities to target areas not typically available for burns will be used if they become available.

Conditions will be continually monitored by emergency services leading into and across autumn.

Despite the increased fire risk in some areas, Victoria is well prepared for potential fires. Our water bombing and air supervision and intelligence aircraft are ready to support our dedicated firefighters on the ground.

The Outlook for Autumn is prepared by AFAC, the National Council for fire and emergency services in Australia and New Zealand, and supported by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) along with state and territory fire and land managers.
