Strathewen Primary School students are learning and teaching others about all aspects of fire including fire behaviour and the history of fire in their area.
In 2016 the Strathewen Arthurs Creek Bushfire Awareness Partnership was created, a collaboration between Strathewen Primary School students from grade five and six, and Arthurs Creek Strathewen CFA.
The program is driven by students and is about making themselves more aware of how fires impact their local environment, including fire behaviour, and considers ways of managing and reducing risk involved with living in a high fire-risk area like Strathewen.
In the process of learning about it, they have developed a video that tells the story of the work done so far.
The partnership between Strathewen Primary School and Arthurs Creek-Strathewen CFA was recognised in 2017 as a recipient of the Resilient Australia Awards for their Claymation project.
Following this, in 2018 they were considered Highly Commended in the Awards for the creation of a picture story book titled ‘Life in the Bush, Gem Gem’s next adventure’.
